Intubation

We've been very lucky to have the world-renowned airway educator Richard Levitan give a series of courses in Glasgow. This checklist covers three main topics:

  1. Preparation prior to intubation
    • Resuscitation
    • Positioning
  2. Epiglottoscopy
    • Stage 1: light grip, find uvula then advance midline until epiglottis found (only horizontal structure in the airway)
    • Stage 2: switch to power grip and lift (when blade sited in vallecula)
    • Stage 3: bimanual laryngoscopy to improve view if required
    • Stage 4: head elevate to improve view if required
  3. Tube insertion: Rich has a preference for stylets but there are tips for both stylets and bougies
