Resuscitative Hysterotomy

Probably the most feared of all resus skills! Cutting a foetus from a mothers abdomen is a difficult scenario to train for procedurally and psychologically. But the potential rewards are great - you might just save two lives.

Key points:

  • You are doing it to save mum (you might save baby in the process)

  • The earlier it is done the better the chance of a favourable outcome

  • You need three high-functioning (and independent) teams working simultaneously

    • Maternal ALS

    • Hysterotomy

    • Neonatal Resus

  • The procedure itself is fairly unrefined: cut, cut, cut, hand in, baby out.
