Rapid Infusion Catheter
The RIC allows rapid upsizing of an IV cannula (as small as a pink 20G) to a very large-bore catheter in a peripheral vein. The 8.5Fr RIC is the fastest-flowing of all IV devices permitting 1L crystalloid to be infused in 46 seconds (next closest is a 14G cannula which is half as fast!!). What is required is 6-8cm of relatively straight, decent-quality peripheral vein (typically cubital fossa, cephalic vein in forearm, saphenous vein, external jugular). The Femoral vein is too deep and avoid leg veins if pelvic/abdominal injury suspected.
