Central Line

This is how St Mungo's recommends the preparation and procedure of central line insertion. Firstly - the kit! These checklists show the kit required and the ideal way to lay them out on a clean trolley (using sterile technique). Click on an image to enlarge.

 

Next up is the sterile setup. When time permits (non-emergent line placement) we advocate the Central Line Insertion Bundle checklist. This ensures the optimum sterility and reduces the risk of central line infections further down the road.

 

And finally the procedure itself. Maintain sterility throughout (including stitching and dressing application). An ultrasound-guided technique is now the recommended method.
